This year I lost my job as Content & Marketing Manager for a start-up website, and later two freelance gigs to the economic meltdown. Still, this has been the most fulfilling year of my life. I started SeeingGood.com to help people find possibilities in challenging circumstances. My brand of positive thinking acknowledges life’s difficulties, and highlights how we can grow and even benefit from them. more...
Why are you perfect for this job?
I have always been a glass-half-full, seize-the-day kind of person, even when I was younger and didn’t have the greatest health. In 2006, I walked across the country as part of a promotional tour for fitness products. In my downtime on the road, I stopped in schools and hospitals to talk to young girls and women about health, happiness and self-esteem. Since then, I’ve written over 70 articles for ‘tween magazines Six78th and Discovery Girls. This year I launched my blog, SeeingGood.com shortly after losing my job. Although I write about positive thinking, it’s more about acknowledging we’ll always have adversity in life, and finding possibilities and beauty within it. It’s exciting to realize my writing has made a difference, as I knew it had when I recently contributed a post to tinybuddha.com: 10 Ways I Know There’s Nothing Wrong with You (or Me). I live for the type of conversations that post started. I’d be humbled and honored to contribute here.
How do you maintain your good mood naturally?
REGULAR YOGA. I get free classes by volunteering behind the desk, something that also brings me joy. CALLING HOME. I’ve made the choice to live in California—3,000 miles from my Red-Sox loving parents and siblings. It only works for me if I get to hear all about their wicked cool lives (Bostonisms). MEANINGFUL CONVERSATIONS. I want to feel connected to people; to open myself up, and hopefully encourage them to do the same. PLAYING. I run with my arms flailing, like Phoebe did in my favorite episode of Friends. I don’t care who sees. SINGING. I actually met my boyfriend at karaoke, where we sang Somewhere Out There together. Yes, we’re cheesy like that. CLEANING. I’m big into minimalism—and I have 250 books on minimalism to prove it. Kidding! I actually give things away whenever I can, and keep my space clean and uncluttered for a clearer mind. HONESTY. I used to pretend I was perfect because I mistakenly believed I’d be happy if everyone admired me. Now I admit I have weaknesses and make mistakes, and it feels good. I’m human—the jig is up. I might as well just embrace it. WRITING. It’s my greatest passion in life. Thank you for reading. I appreciate your vote!
