Can some of the ingredients in SAM-e increase your cholesterol

A concerned SAM-e user questioned whether the medium-chain triglycerides in the formulation could cause an increase in cholesterol levels.

Medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs) are listed as an ingredient in SAM-e complete. MCTs are semisynthetic lipids usually made from hydrolyzed coconut oil or palm kernel oils. The MCTs in SAM-e Complete are part of the formulation to aid in stability and absorption of the key ingredient, SAM-e. There are conflicting reports in the medical literature of their effects on cholesterol and triglyceride levels in humans. Some reports suggest that MCTs (moderate to large amounts) may increase cholesterol levels, other reports indicate no effect or a slight lowering of cholesterol.

Regardless, the amounts of MCTs in a single 200 or 400 mg capsule are so minute that there is very little chance that they  have any effect (positive or negative) on cholesterol levels.

It is important for people to recognize there are many reasons why cholesterol levels may increase in our bodies over time. Keeping an eye on cholesterol should be part of any wellness regimen. It is also advisable that you consult with your primary health care professional about the use of any dietary supplement you are taking, or intend to take. This will allow your health care professional to be alert to any changes in your overall well-being.
