What about Sam-e and GABA?
GABA, or gamma-aminobutyric acid, is a natural neurochemical in the brain and central nervous system. It generally plays an inhibitory role, that is to say, it reduces neuronal activity in the brain. Drugs such as the benzodiazepines (eg. Valium, Xanax, etc), sleeping pills like Ambien or Lunesta, and some other drugs like Baclofen, exert their actions by affecting GABA. Unfortunately there is little or no scientific or clinical data regarding the effectiveness, safety or potential interactions when using GABA as a dietary supplement.
Although it is unlikely that SAM-e would interact with supplemental GABA, Since there is no data nor studies looking at such interactions, one can not say with certainty.
In that regard, it is important and advised that you consult with your primary health care professional about the use of any dietary supplements you are taking, or intend to take together. This will allow your health care professional to be alert to any changes in your overall well-being.
