Q: Why does SAM-e cause constipation?
Although some people may experience constipation, constipation is not a frequently noted side effect of SAM-e. SAM-e is generally well tolerated, however diarhea has been noted to occur in some people at higher doses. This may be due to bile being released from the liver or a stimulatory effect similiar to caffeine. These side effects typically are mild and resolve over time.
