Don’t Freak Out: 5 Natural Ways to Deal With Stress

Stress comes in many forms. It might be the minute things that drive you crazy: bumper-to-bumper traffic, spilling coffee on a new skirt, kids that don’t want to turn off the television for bed. For others, the big things pile up at once: paying taxes, planning a wedding, buying a new car. No matter what the factors are that cause your stress, its something we all have to deal with. Before you let those stressors get the better of you, take a look at these tips on how to deal with those stressful moments in your life.

  • Breathe – As simple as this sounds, many of us forget to do it. Instead of allowing pressure to mount, stop yourself from moving— from taking another step— and just breathe. You’ll find that closing your eyes and inhaling deeply through your nose and out of your mouth will allow you to take in more oxygen and give you the time you might need to assess the situation and react with a more level head. Check out this article at HowToDoThings.comfor more info.
  • Exercise – Love it or hate it, exercising can help you be more prepared when stress comes your way. There’s no need to become a bodybuilder, but physical fitness can help you both physiologically and mentally. Exercise comes in many forms, though, so even taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or parking a little farther away from the office, adds up.
  • Laugh – The adage “laughter is the best medicine” has never been so appropriate as it is when it comes to dealing with the things that stress you out. By finding the absurdity and humor in a stressful situation, you might be able to diffuse it before it becomes toxic. Next time you feel like the walls are closing in, just think of your favorite funny movie or picture the cause of the stress to be something absurd or silly.
  • Do Something Else – Sometimes, the truth is unavoidable, and there is no reason to put off until tomorrow what you can do today. But, sometimes we give ourselves artificial deadlines that can cause undue stress. So, instead of worrying about getting to the drycleaners by 3:30, give yourself the time you need to relax and know that it won’t be the end of the world if you don’t make it by then. Listen to your favorite song or play an online game to take your mind away momentarily.
  • Share – There’s no sense in keeping all your stressors bottled up inside. If you can, find a friend to help you vent—you can help each other deal with stress much easier than if you were to tackle it by yourself. If all else fails, and no one seems to understand where you’re coming from, take a minute to write things down. You might find that the very thing you’re getting upset over really isn’t that bad, once you put it in perspective.

Sounds all good, but really who has time to exercise. And, what if it really is a big deal... How about if you're the person all your friends go to, then who do you go to?

Amber Tuesday, June 17, 2008

tHANK YOU, i AM ALWAYS UPTIGHT LATELY, ITS DRIVIN' ME CRAZY!

Fatima Tuesday, June 17, 2008

I've tried the breathing, and I'm not sure if it works for me or not. The thing is, before I can think about breathing or anything else, I'm in a whirlwind of stress and can't think or even breathe.

I will try to use your techniques though I don't feel I have much luck. Also, the talk about your stressors, I have no one to talk to about them so they build up even furhter and then I burst.

I have tried these methods and needed to hear it again how good it works. At this time in my life stress is all there is. I normally can control my stress level but having some minor difficulties.
