A Beach Day Photoblog
It's a bit of a commute to my favorite beach, the one that's never crowded and allows dogs. But ever since I discovered it, this beach has become my respite from the crowds and commotion of L.A. At first I would just drive there to take a walk near the water, but soon I started packing a snack and a beach towel, then I added a book and a picnic lunch for both Maddy and me. For Christmas my mom bought me a pop-up cabana, and that sealed the deal: this beach is now my mobile office.
| First I follow this little trail that runs parallel to the ocean. | |
| And then an uneven wooden staircase down to the water. | |
| I set up my office on a bluff. | |
| I keep inviting Maddy into the cabana but she prefers to keep a lookout on the outside. | |
| The tide is on its way out so I'm constantly scanning for some little left-behind treasure tucked into rocks. | |
| Treasures like these. | |
| Pretty soon even things that are usually ugly started to look beautiful. Look how artistically this seaweed was sticking to a rock. | |
| Then Maddy spotted an elderly man and a seagull at the far end of the beach and gave them the stinkeye. | |
| But I said that they were probably okay. | |
| Dolphins showed up and were doing SeaWorld style jumps right in front of me for no reason. I wish I had better luck with the timing of my photo. You can only see their fins here. | |
| Then the light turned late and it was time to go. |

Very cool to have a secluded dog beach with dolphins!!
I have a pop-up tent that looks a little like your cabana and I'm always afraid to get it out because getting it back into the carrying case is a major puzzle.

Very nice! I've never been to a beach with rocks instead of shells before, we don't get that here in Florida :)

What a serene beach! From the trail to the green hills in the background, the steps to the empitness, it's almost... un-California, and certainly un-La. I can see why you'd make it your "office" and "work" there. Thanks for sharing. :-)

Jeez, could it get any more perfect! The first photo looks like you were in Tuscany, then the beach is all secluded (which is the best kind), then you find cute little treasures, THEN dolphins come for your own private show!
Sorry, I was just living vicariously through you for a minute there.
Hope you get more days to do that!

Hi Brigitte - Can I ask what type of camera you use? That close up of Maddy is so crystal clear! Thanks for sharing and putting me in a good mood.
Brigitte Friday, February 19, 2010
@Brian - my camera is just a Nikon Coolpix L2- a low-end digital point and shoot that's several years old. I got lucky with that Maddy shot by putting it in the "closeup" mode- she must have been at just the right distance :)

Maddy's stinkeye is not something to take likely.

Thanks for your photo blog. I do envy you and Maddy being able to sit on a beach in midwinter. Here in UK it is cold and snowy, but still lightened my mood.

Great photos Brigitte. How could such an amazing 'office' not put you in a good mood?

Cool. We have to share our dog beach with fishermen. And, fisherwomen... Is fisherpeople a word??

Hey Brigitte,
Beautiful, great little treasures and lovely just looking at the sea. I've spent the last week doing pretty similar things. Am now on the beachfront in Manly, Sydney, Australia. It is so stunning here.
Hope you're well.

Love the pictures - and your treasures. And now I really want a little cabana like yours - the stripes are so jaunty!

Hello Brigitte,
This blog reminds me that we should not take our beaches for granted, I live 7 minutes from the beach in Florida and can count on one hand how many times I have gone to the beach in recent history. With the Gulf Oil spill it brings to mind that our beaches as we know them will forever be affected by this tragedy.
Your Beach day blog has put me in a beachy mood and I will get out to the beach more often.
