A Random Happy List
Everybody has certain things that make them happy for no good reason. Besides making lists (what is it about putting things into numbered lists that's so enjoyable?) here are a few of mine:

- The noise that mourning doves make as they fly. Most birds don't do that. I guess it's basically a bird grunting noise? So the dove is flying and letting out an involuntary "ugh" every time she flaps her wings? That shouldn't be attractive! But it is. And that's one of the reasons that mourning doves are my favorite bird.
- Other people's birthdays at restaurants... the kind of restaurants where all the servers gather and do some kind of clap/chant and present a complimentary dessert to the birthday boy or girl. That look of sweet embarrassment that people have when the birthday dessert is presented to them, and the looks on everyone else's faces as they watch… I love it.
- When the dish soap bottle squirts out a cloud of little bubbles. You can never do this if you try; it only ever happens as an accident. You set the soap down and suddenly you're surrounded by tiny floating bubbles. It's a bit of magic the universe reserves for those of us without dishwashers.
- Sharpening pencils. I do it very carefully, and try to make the shavings into shapes like perfect sunshines.
- Changing light bulbs. Every time I put in the new bulb and flip the switch for the first time, EVERY TIME, it's a little thrill when the light comes on.
What are some of the things that make you happy for no good reason?

The dove sound you mentioned is the sound they make when they are flushed from cover - it alerts other birds of danger nearby. Pheasants make a similar sound, so maybe it's common among birds who hang out on the ground a lot.
You can hear that flushing sound here under the "Other" section on this page (a great site for birders!)
