Barrier to Success
“There are only two tragedies in life:
one is not getting what one wants,
and the other is getting it.” ~ Oscar Wilde
This quote resonates deeply with me.
Of all the goals I’m working on, some of them I wish I had already accomplished. They involve hard work, dedication and focus. I occasionally get distracted and drift away from one or more of these necessary elements. Yet, each day I set out to step closer to my goals.
Some days I am so productive I amaze myself. Other days are full of barriers. These barriers can be self-imposed, or external (the car needs repair, last minute emergency for my blog). However, I believe the external distractions may be something I somehow create myself--excuses to avoid the next step.
Yet why would I create distractions from my goals?
I believe it is because of the other half of the quote above. What if I actually achieve my goal? What then?
There is always a certain amount of fear in the unknown. I know how to work on my goals, but I don’t know what I’ll do once I achieve my goals. How will my life change? What will keep me motivated?
And what if my goal turns out to feel nothing like I expected?
We can imagine the future all we want, but we don’t know what it will actually be until we get there.
That can be scary.
However, it is important to enjoy our journey. If we stop half way to our goal because we don’t know what will happen once we get there our journey halts too. Continue towards the goal, but be present for each step to it.
Today, for example, one item on my to do list is to write 1500 words for the book I’m working on. I was dragging my feet at first coming up with all the excuses to avoid doing it. But then I just parked myself in front of the computer and did it. Once I got into the creative flow, I was completely present, and loved the process. Writing this book may help to accomplish a larger goal, but when I’m in the middle of writing, the process is incredibly delicious and enjoyable.
The process is not a mean to an end. The process is the end.

I am taking 600 mg of SAM-e for arthritis pain. I take first dose on empty stomach half hour before breakfast. I eat 3 meals a day with 3 snacks between the meals. The other two doses I take 2 hours after eating and then eat nothing for half an hour. Is that interfering with SAM-e's effectiveness? I do think SAM-e is helping my chronic pain, but want to be sure this scheduling of doses is OK. Any suggestions or comments would be helpful. Thanks so much.
