Better Home, Better Mood, Better You
Imagine this: You arrive home after a long day. You drop your bag, kick off your shoes, fall back in a comfy recliner, flip on the television and begin to edge effortlessly toward a state of pure relaxation. All of those factors of feeling “right at home” lift the stresses of the day off your shoulders and are the steps to finding your good mood. There are many ways your surroundings can affect your mood. Where you live isn’t important, it’s all about how you feel in your environment. Even if your current home isn’t your dream home, there are some things that make for easy weekend projects and DIY ventures that will help you improve your home as well as your mood.
The key to creating that perfect mood and literally transforming your home into a haven is as simple as tackling some easy and inexpensive—yet effective— home improvement projects that will lift your spirits and calm your mind the minute you open the door.
• Declutter – Quite possibly one of the most inexpensive ways to change the mood of your home is to declutter your living space. A cluttered, unmanaged home can make you feel anxious, nervous and on edge. Getting rid of those old weights, computer parts, jeans that don’t fit, stacks of papers and notebooks from college, and mounds of memorabilia will not only clean your space, but also help to lighten the mood of a home and lessen everyday stresses. Also, making a quick trip to the Salvation Army with all that excess clutter could also bring a much-needed smile to your face. • Color – Many people don’t realize that the minute they enter the door, the colors that don their walls and furniture are key contributors to their moods. Following with our theme of rest and relaxation, dark blues and greens have been proven to create a restorative and calming feel within a space. For the more artistic types, reds, yellows and oranges have been said to inspire and motivate. But don’t stop with paint, change the colors of your picture frames, lamp shades, and other decorative items to reflect the mood and feel you want to experience at home.
• “The Smile Factor”- Make sure you are surrounded by photos, screensavers, calendars and mouse pads that contain scenes, places, memories and experiences that make you smile the minute your eyes fall on them. Whether it is a photo of you and a loved one placed next to your favorite spot or a calendar of tropical getaways on your bedroom wall— these small, yet significant accessories will take your mind to a place of peace, calm and even expectation.
• Clean with Zing - A touch of citrus fruit to your regular cleaning regime can help to make your home feel as if it is just steps away from the tropics. By creating your own personalized citrus cleaning spray comprised of 2 tablespoons lemon juice, ½ teaspoon liquid soap, ½ teaspoon washing soda, 1 teaspoon Borax and 2 cups of hot water, you can create a cleaning spray that not only smells great, but is safe for the environment. Citrus cleaning recipes can add that special touch of the tropics and help your home truly look and feel like an escape.
These simple, inexpensive, yet indispensible home modifications can help to reinvent your everyday living space into a personalized haven. Though not everyone has the luxury of dropping their briefcase, lounging in a chair and flipping on the television the minute they enter the door, these simple changes can help to enhance the mood of anyone’s home and help to generate feelings of calm, relaxation, and restoration so many of us seek daily. What are some of the ways you like to claim your space and get into a great mood?
