Boosting the National Mood
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the national mood, and how it affects us as individuals. There’s been quite a bit of talk lately about “Hope” and “Change” since last year, but it seems like we’re still stuck in the grip of recession and overall “tough times.” But how important is the idea of “hope” when it comes to the national mood?
Has our new President already lifted our spirits with his positivity and eloquence, or do we still need more convincing?
So what are some of the things you can do to help spread the messages of hope and change to make the national mood a more positive one? I have a few suggestions, but you can help me add to this list by leaving comments of ways you think you can help boost the national mood. And hopefully, not only will these tips help the national mood, but they’ll make you feel great, too.
• Volunteer – By getting involved in your community, you can get in touch with the people who are feeling the crunch of the economic struggle the most. Not only is volunteering good for others, but it can give you a great sense of well-being and help you feel connected to the world around you.
• Attend a Local Festival or Event – Chances are likely that there are a slew of ways you can see your community at its best when you go to a local festival or event. They happen everywhere, and with the weather starting to warm up, people are going outside and enjoying each other’s company. • Learn a New Skill – Getting involved in the community through volunteering and events are a great way to be connected to the world around you, but in order to become a better citizen, you might need to prepare yourself by doing things that can help you be more skillful and knowledgeable. By learning a new skill, you will not only be a great resource to your friends and community, but you never know how great you’ll be at something until you try it. It also doesn’t have to cost much, if anything, to learn a new skill or trade. Who knows, you could even end up making money from doing something you are great at and love doing. Imagine that!
• Write a Letter to Your Congressman – For a long time, I considered the government to be some sort of unapproachable entity that I had no chance of reaching. As it turns out, writing to your Congressperson is an easy way to have your voice heard. Remember that the government is comprised of people like you, and they are there to represent you, so let them know what your concerns are.
• Smile and Say Hello – Sometimes, all it takes to feel good is by sharing a good feeling with others. This can be as simple as a smile. If you smile at a stranger, then you might make her day without even realizing it. She might take that good feeling and pass it on. That good mood is infectious, and who knows how far it could spread?
I think that though the economy is in a slump, we as individuals can positively impact the national mood. Spring is right around the corner, so get out there and start spreading your good mood! Leave a comment telling everyone how you plan to help bring back the nation’s good mood.
