Central Coast Photoblog
Out of the two of us, I would say that Madeline is often "the fun one". She's excited to arrive anywhere. When the car door opens, she always does a convincing job of pretending like it's the most interesting place she's ever been, even if it's just a gas station we're stopping at to ask directions. I appreciate that.
We set off this week on a little exploration of California's central coast.
| About two hours north of Los Angeles there starts to be long stretches of road without another car in sight. That always gives me a little thrill, like being the only person in a swimming pool. | ![]() |
| It was about the same time the roads emptied out that I realized how little of California's landscape I was familiar with. For example, I didn't know California had so many hills like these. | ![]() |
| And I knew California made wine, but had not seen the vineyards. | ![]() |
| The only down-side, if you can even call it that, about taking a road trip alone with a dog is that there is no one to take your photo at rest stop vista points and you are forced to rely on the awkwardly timed shots taken by a self-timer. | ![]() |
| Morro Bay is a beautiful little town with a huge lump of a rock in its bay. | ![]() |
|
The lump stands in the background of every westward photo taken in the town of Morro Bay like that over-eager friend who jumps into every group shot. Yes, lump, we see you. |
![]() |
| I stayed the night in (and fell in love with) the small town of Cayucos. Here's the view from my hotel. | ![]() |
| Whenever I get to a hotel I always take a photo through the peephole. I pretend that from now on, the peephole will be my only view of the world for the rest of my life. Until I get claustrophobic. | ![]() |
| This hotel has special peepholes near the floor for dogs. Here's a photo of what Madeline could see through her peephole. | ![]() |
| It was crazy windy on the beach. I couldn't tell for sure, but I think Maddy liked the way the wind parted her fur and exposed bare skin that never usually sees the light of day. | ![]() |
|
And it's not a trip to the beach without a sunset picture. After I took these photos yesterday, I loaded the pictures onto my computer to make room for more. But then, back at the beach, I slipped on a rock and dropped my camera into the ocean. Ouch. Although I fished it out and dried it, it looks like my camera may have taken its last photo. I'm really thankful I was at least able to save some of the images before that happened! |

Looks like a fun trip! Fun idea of taking pictures through the peepholes, never would have thought of that!

Fun! I love visiting small towns; I'll have to go visit these next time I'm in southern California. Apparently the lump is named Morro Rock, and has its own article in Wikipedia.

Really great Brigitte!
...I don't know California , at all.
I always picture it dry, we always laughed at "Little House on the Prairie"(TV) because the grass around the houses was green, but the pastures/fields were ALWAYS brown.
... like those Malibu hills in M*A*S*H . :)

Great pictures, my favorite is Maddy enjoying the wind. Sorry your camera is dead. Time to start making strong hints to family and friends what you want for your birthday.

Oh! Poor camera, that must have been very disappointing. And I would love to stay at a hotel that has doggie peep holes. :)

Try putting the camera in uncooked rice. Leave it off then put it in the rice overnight. The rice will absorb all the moisture out of the camera. It might not work, but its worth a shot.

California is chock-full of pleasant suprises and beauty. Especially the Bay Area where I live.
Keep up the good work and drive safely.

Great last pictures and great story. I didn't know it was possible to take photos through a peephole! I'd take one right now, but India doesn't seem to put peepholes on doors. :)

Hello,Brigitte.
Your travelogues are always a breath of fresh air. And, being from LA, Maddy must love the fresh air at the beach. Pity about your camera. I wonder what pictures you thought you could take, during the rest of the journey, yet missed them due to being camera poor.

I love this part of California :) Amanda and I biked through Morro Bay and all the wine countrysides... all these pictures bring back a lot of memories.
I hope your camera starts working again soon :( road trips with no camera on hand are no good *shakes head*
