Choose to Think Positively
You’ve heard the phrase, “there’s always a silver lining,” but how often do you apply it? Think about the things in your life that drive you bonkers. Now, how can each one of those things be seen as a positive influence? The answers are all right in front of you; you just have to know how to look for them.

- Take the Good with the Bad – One of the things I’ve always had pride in is my ability to look at something and try and find the good in it. If I get a flat tire, I look at it as an opportunity to prove that I know how to change a tire. Sure, that doesn’t necessarily outweigh the cost of a new tire or the fact that I have to ride on a donut for a while, but look what I can do!
- Make Better Decisions – If you choose to have a positive outlook, then you might just make better decisions. Instead of saying, “aw, I ate a piece of cake and now I’m off my diet, I’m awful,” a positive outlook might cause you to say, “that cake was delicious, I deserved it, and now I get to go to the gym.” Maybe no one has ever said it quite like this, but nonetheless, your positive attitude can help you make better choices.
- Build Your Confidence – One of my pet peeves is when I hear someone say, “I can’t do that,” or “I’m not good at that.” You don’t have to be good at everything, but you might as well try something before you automatically dismiss it as something you are incapable of. You are always going to encounter difficult things, but by thinking positively, it can make those difficult things easier to overcome. If you think good, positive thoughts, it can really do a lot for your self-esteem. Your confidence will soar when you realize there is nothing you are incapable of doing.
- Set Goals and Conquer Them – So when can you apply positive thinking? Anytime you are faced with a decision or a challenge, certainly, but you can also choose to be proactively using your positive thoughts. Set some goals for yourself. Start out with something realistic, whether it is to read books more often, to spend more time with a friend, or to spend less money, you are capable of it. Goals are difficult to reach if you put them on a pedestal of something you want but can’t have. Anything can be yours, you just have to stop making excuses and do what you have to do to make it happen.
Part of being in a good mood is feeling good about who you are and what you’re doing. So in order to get there, sometimes all it takes is a little positive thinking.
