Coming Home for Homecoming

Homecoming is a way for high schools and colleges to celebrate the return of their home team, and often includes a major celebration to commemorate the arrival. But homecoming can also be a time to celebrate having loved ones around or to visit the place you were raised. I’ve scoured the web and found a few stories that will give you an idea of the kind of good mood that a proper homecoming can give you as well as the people you come home to.

Soldier Dad Surprise – Stationed in Iraq, Air Force Master Sergeant Joseph Myers spent 350 days away from his family. Imagine his 10-year old daughter’s surprise when he walked into her classroom the day before 4th grade was wrapping up. Check out her reaction on this video: Father Surprises Daughter- Homecoming From Iraq

Girl on Men’s Football Team voted Homecoming Queen – Standing at a menacing five feet, three inches tall, Jane Montgomery is one of the stars on her high school’s football team. When the head coach first asked her to try out for the position previously held by her brother, she said no. But the coach was eventually able to convince her and it proved to be a good decision as Jane kicked a nearly perfect 31 of 32 as the team’s field goal kicker. During the homecoming ceremony, she came out of the tunnel, brushed her hair, and instead of putting on her helmet, put on a crown.

Special Needs Kids Elected Homecoming King and Queen – All over the country, high schoolers are voting their fellow special needs students into the homecoming court.  In South Dakota, New Mexico, and Kansas, classmates, without the aid of parents or teachers, organized and demanded that their friends be put on the ballot. Recently, laws have given the right to special needs students to be in classrooms with the general student body. This inclusion has helped students make new friendships and is most evident in the thunderous applause all the special needs students received when their names were announced.
