Embrace the Cool - Preparing for Cooler Weather
Unless you live in the very southern part of the U.S. (and even if you do), you may have noticed a recent chill in the air. Yep, it’s finally fall. Shorts and swimsuits are being packed away, and evenings outdoors now require the comfort of a jacket.
I’m cold natured to begin with, so I don’t hesitate to bring out the sweatshirts and thick socks as soon as the weather begins to cool. But transitioning from the warmth of summer to colder weather isn’t always the kind of change that puts me in a good mood.
To get a little more excited about fall, I’ve compiled a list of cool weather activities to ensure that any warm weather worshiper will welcome cool breezes with a smile.

Embrace the Rentrée – In France, fall is filled with even greater excitement. As millions return from their weeks-long vacations, the political scene gets going again, and hundreds of new books appear on the shelves. While the “rentrée” (the return) isn’t such a big deal in the U.S., fall is a great time for getting back into the groove of things after a summer off. Re-start an exercise routine, now that the heat won’t slow you down. And now that summer vacations are over, it’s a great time to re-gather with old groups of friends. Get back into traditions that make you feel good.
Cozy up with a Chai – Yes, espresso drinks can be a bit of a splurge, but there’s nothing like treating yourself to a warm chai latte on a chilly afternoon. You could even try making chai at home. Chai lattes taste great with a good book or a relaxing comedy film.
Refresh the Wardrobe – Fall back in love with your cool-weather clothes. The beginning of fall is a great time to unpack those sweaters and scarves from the end of last winter. Send ‘em through the wash (or hand clean, depending on the material) to make your old outfits feel and smell like new.
Take a Fall Photo Shoot – In college, my dorm was next to a small, woodsy park. On a beautiful gray day in October, I grabbed my camera and spent over an hour snapping pictures of colorful trees and benches covered with leaves. I got some great shots, many of which I printed and put up to decorate my room for the season. Every year since then, I’ve tried to take my camera out at least once.
Make a Master Plan for the Holidays – You may not be ready to bring out the boughs and holly just yet, but a little early holiday gift hunting could be a fun way to stay inside on a colder day. Plus, it’s so much easier to find what you’re looking for before the mall is wall-to-wall with fellow shoppers.
What activities boost your mood in cooler weather?
