Finding the Right Balance
“When we get too caught up in the busyness of the world, we lose connection with one another and ourselves.” ~Jack Kornfield
As a work-from-home wife, I sometimes lose the track of time. I spend hours clicking away at the keyboard. When becoming absorbed in my creative work, what I often overlooked was that my family needed me too.

I would spend long chunks of time in my office. I was hooked. I wrote and wrote as if my “creative well would dry up tomorrow.” After all, I was living off my craft and loving it.
When you first start working from home and actually make money from it, it is easy to be sucked into the work. Every spare moment can be used for something to grow my new business.
Basically, you end up unintentionally neglecting your loved ones. That’s what I went through. But soon enough I realized how this might affect my marriage in future.
I got a wake-up call and started brainstorming: How do I get out of this rut? What should I do?
A voice answered: Be still. Be in the Now. Breathe deeply. I followed exactly what the small voice told me to do. In no time, I felt relaxed and present. It was then that I discovered the three steps which helped me to balance it all out:
- Make a Schedule - Always try to schedule your day. This will help you to stay organized and reduce clutter from your life. It may be a simple act of creating a To-Do list which takes 10 minutes of your time but helps manifold. I schedule before my workday begins, but I try to avoid getting too specific with it. I don’t necessarily have a tight time-frame against a task; just a general list that allows me to mentally divide my time up. You may want to create a loose schedule like I do or stick to a tight one.
- Take a Break - Take time out from your daily routine. Go out on self-dates or pamper yourself for one day. Don’t be a clock-watcher while you’re at it. Give yourself wholly to this “me-time.” Live every moment in the now.
- Meditate for Clarity - Find a comfortable spot to sit--a mat or a chair. Sit straight. Relax. Close your eyes. Start with a positive thought (I like to focus on “I am blessed”). Imagine yourself surrounded by white light (for grounding). Breathe in slowly. Breathe out. Do this seven times. Alternate with fast-paced breaths. Continue for 15 minutes.
