Foods for Your Mood
Eating a proper diet is a major part of my life, and I love foods that make me feel good and that I also know are good for my body. Here’s a list of some of the foods that I use to help me keep up my spirits and maintain a healthy mood naturally throughout the day.
Soluble Fiber – Controlling your blood sugars is one healthy way to help control mood swings. According to this article on Today, foods that contain soluble fiber can help slow down sugar absorption into your bloodstream, which helps to keep your blood sugar levels within normal ranges and lessens the chance of having mood swings. Foods such as oats, apples, pears, oranges and sweet potatoes are great sources of soluble fiber.
Protein – You can slow the body’s absorption of carbs from the foods that you eat by adding a little protein to your meals or snacks Protein foods such as low-fat yogurt, cheese stick or a handful of almonds or other nuts will give you longer lasting energy levels and help keep your mood afloat while you work.
Vitamin D – It is believed that eating foods rich in Vitamin D may help increase serotonin levels in your body. So be sure to include milk and, fish such as tuna or sardines in your diet, or take a Vitamin D supplement to help maintain healthy serotonin levels.
Omega 3 – Fatty fish like salmon, tuna and others are high in Omega-3s, which are fatty acids that can help stimulate brain functions. Although it is not yet fully understood how Omega-3s might help your mood, they can help support and regulate virtually every system in the body, which includes the cardiovascular, immune and nervous systems. Good food sources of omega 3s include flaxseed oil, walnuts and omega-3 fortified eggs, as well as fish oil supplements.
Some other foods that you might want to consider for staying healthy are those high in vitamin C, folic acid or calcium. Foods like grape tomatoes, brown rice and butternut squash are high in vitamins and minerals. Of course, it’s ok to treat yourself every once in while with some comfort food. One great source is chocolate, which contains serotonin-boosting carbs (and it’s always delicious). Just be sure you avoid some of the calorie-laden junk foods like these.

I for some reason am always tired, wether I go to bed early or late, Im still tired, all the time, I hate it. Im a single parent that is a full-time worker at a local grocery store here in Texas! My daughter is 3yrs. So I recently went to a Wal-Mart to ask the pharmacy what would be good to take for lack of energy! He had said B-Complex!

How in the world do researchers know how it affects moods in our complex bodily systems?
Yes, I already use Omega-3 fish oil caplets for the benefits. For moods, I'm not convinced.

i never knew that what you eat could effect your mood. i have lately seen that i can't handle anything that's out of my routine and im very easily upset when problems happen.
i will try to eat better and see if maybe it changes my moods for the better.

I have a genetic blood disorder that is aggrevated by stress. Recently my energy level is improving with weight loss, due to an appetite suppressant needed for obesity. I tried SAM-E because I was told it would help with joint pain and increase ease of mobility. I felt my mood become elevated immediately! My lunch tasted better on the first day and I smiled more. I'm glad I tried it.

You are what you eat. Your body only has what you give it to function off of....eat well! There is way too much junk and bad fast food out there.

I agree with amber c. I never realized food is a cause of a persons mood swing. Now that I know I am going to definitely start watching what I eat. Learning this new info regarding mood swings and food actually told me alot about myself. I WILL BECOME A BETTER PERSON BY EATING BETTER FOODS! THANKS SAM-E and others too.

I too am a mom of 3. ALWAYS tired. I've had blood tests and a sleep study. I am perfectly healthy! But oh so tired and can't handle out of routine things and have little to no patience. I would love to feel calmer and revitalize. May just give SAM-e a try.

SAM-e is a fantastic product that can generally benefit anyone who takes it, even for physical issues you might not have been thinking about! I have taken SAM-e pretty regularly for nearly 8 years. It improves my mood, the texture of my skin and greatly improves the natural detoxifying processes of my body! If you drink alcohol, even casually, SAM-e will help with the long term effects on your body.
Here are a few important things you need to know about taking this stuff;
You must, must, MUST take it on an empty stomach (nothing for at least 45 minutes before and nothing for 30 minutes after, except for liquids). You must stay away from all dairy during that time frame (this includes dairy creamer in coffee, a mistake I've made!). If you do eat and/or consume dairy you'll neutralize the SAME-e and gain little to no benefit.
You also want to be sure you are taking a B-complex vitamin. Most of the B vitamins (especially B-12) are necessary to help the SAM-e do it's job. B-complexes are also great for over all mental health, the way I see it, I'm giving my body not one but two powerhouse nutrients!
Another important supplement to know about is TMG (Trimethylglycine). Put simply, once your body metabolizes the SAM-e there is a byproduct left over that needs to be processed out (this is true of all vitamins to different degrees). TMG helps convert that byproduct to something easily eliminated AND is a great supplement for cardio health!
There's plenty more good information about this great product, I suggest finding yourself a book on it, there are several.
I want to share this info because I've seen people give up on it because they didn't know how to properly take SAM-e. I hope this has been helpful!

I recently read an article in Reader's Digest re: always tired, had every test ran, tried diet, exercise, multi-vitamins, etc.- the culprit wound up being the micro-organisms that live in our bed/bedding (and on us); was quite eye-opening. Solution - air beds out before remaking; vaccum mattress, etc.

After reading these comment and being in total agreement with all of them about my sttitude and diet. I am going to try this for sure. i think all the articles should be more specific like the comment from Spring. I always ask my pharmaceutical expert before trying anything though just to be safe.

Spring, thank you so much for your detailed comments...I plan to look for the Sam-e and the B complex vitamin...I recently gave us smoking - 9 months ago and I was thinking my mood was off due to that - but now I'm beginning to think it's something else entirely...and as you could image since I stopped smoking my diet is not that great either...I'm typically a "happy" person...and of course I'll consult my doctor...

Hi and thank you for the "foods for your mood" People who are depressed consume more sugar than people not depressed. Many people do not reolize that they consume foods high in sugar when they are depressed or when they are having a crisis.I am a mother of nine and tired every single day. I suffer from bipolar disorder. I am against medication because some of the side effect can have some lasting long term health risk, such as high blood pressure, weight gain, and drowsiness. I do agree that if the symtoms are serious then one should not neglect taking medication, because bipolar is a serious medical condition just like an heart attack.
On the other hand if the symptoms are mild than natural supplements such as sam-e are good because they work with the body's chemistry and best of all there is no health risk invovled with sam-e !!

I want to try sam-e for depression. I have to spend a lot of time alone, because I'm layed off in summer from my job. the gas prices are high so don't go too often. I'm hoping sam-e will help for my mood, so I won't have to get a prescription from the doctor.

I've been extremely tired these past 2+ yrs. I think it's because I worry way too much most of the time. My husband is active duty Navy, I work and go to school full time, and we're making so many transitions in life right now...I keep thinking that's why I'm so exhausted. I think I will try it & see if it helps...I would really like to be happy and energetic again...I'll be turning 25 this yr and I feel like I'm turning 55.

Thanks for the comments not to give up. I have sleep apnea and once I had a CPAP machine thought the my attitude was getting back in check. Only now I realize I am not getting good sleep and edgy alot. The B complex and calcium with vita D, has helped and I am tryiny SAM-e again. I think that without true rest nothing was working no matter how much what I took.
Spring, thanks for the insights on taking the Sam-e I think this may be a link to getting the true rest to help me achieve better overall health.
Note to anyone who is always tired, a sleep study may identify other issues. I would never have expected that I had sleep apnea and quit breathing at night. The nutritional regiment is now much more effective that I get some rest and I am looking forward to positive results once I've been on Sam-e longer.

Thank you for sharing your information with us Spring, and for looking out for everyone. I had no idea all that information was involved, but extremely helpful. Thanks again for your help. I was actually diagnosed with bp and am interested in taking this for it, since its a natural product and there are no side effects. Ill talk with my doctor 1st though.

I forgot to mention, this information on you are what you eat, or, what you eat affects your mood is not too surprising to me. I first found out about this from my psychiatrist, and when I saw it again here, I was like, wow, its true (not that I doubted what he said, but hearing it somewhere else helps and reinerates that it must be true). I definitely have to start eating better.

I noticed with many of the comments from people who wrote in,they didn't mention any kind of exercise!
That is a crucial key to feeling better in all aspects of our lives.
When we exercise on a regular basis, we will automatically have more energy, our moods will be lifted, we will sleep better, lose weight, be stronger, happier and see the world in a different light.
I am living proof. As a single woman who lives alone, it's easy to become depressed, also I am 56 years old and the weight comes on easily. So with starting a plan for my self without anyone's help, I exercise about 3 times a week for one hour each. It is difficult to get started and I really have to push myself, but once I am outside or inside physically moving, riding a bike, walking or going somewhere I can use a tread mill, wow ! What a difference in how I feel about life, myself, and the energy is there. I totally sleep better now and have more patience than ever before! Eating healthy foods like fruits and vegetables also is a big plus as well as making sure we allow ourselves enough time to get 8 hours or more of rest each night.
This all takes self awareness but we have to take care of ourselves before we can help others.

I HAVE A 3 YR OLD AND A 1 YR OLD, ME AND MY HUSBAND WORK DIFFERENT SHIFTS, I WORK DAYS AND AM OFF ON WEEKENDS AND HE MOSTLY DOES CLOSING SHIFTS AND WORKS WEEKENDS, I SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE I AM GOING NON-STOP AND THERE IS NO TIME FOR ME, I SHOULD BE HAPPY WITH MY GIRLS BUT MOSTLY FEEL MAD AND TIRED. MAYBE SAM-E WILL GIVE ME MORE PATIENCE WITH MY GIRLS.
