Gallery Hops and Outdoor Music

In just about every town in America, there are opportunities to enjoy your surroundings with a Friday night bout of family fun. Whether it is an outdoor concert or a gallery hop, it doesn't take much to look around you and see what your town has to offer.

For example, Portland, Maine’s First Friday Art Walk is a chance to take an early evening and venture downtown to see art from local artists and craftsmen. You don’t have to buy anything, but it is always nice to realize that there are people in the community who have the knack for producing amazing work that they do.

It certainly puts me in a good mood to know that I am surrounded by talent, and more importantly, that if the kind of work that is happening here is so amazing, it must be the case anywhere else in the country. So next time you are pressed for a Friday night activity, go on a gallery hop and see what the artists in your community are up to.

If art isn’t your thing, there is likely a summer concert series in your area, as well. Often, colleges will have concerts that are not only open to students, but the public, too. Just check the local paper or free publication for a complete list of events in your neighborhood. You might just be surprised at some of the awesome things happening in your area.
