Getting My Priorities Straight

“No success can compensate for failure in the home.” ~David O. McKay

I believe that living a fulfilled life includes leading a healthy professional life. By professional, I don’t mean a blue-collar office job— I’m referring to a meaningful profession where you get to be creative and work towards a purpose that matters to you.

Suspension of this, the leaf

Whether you are working at a job for sake of financial survival or you have dedicated yourself to a creative outlet, one common theme I’ve noticed in both types of professional scenarios is that we get so obsessed with our work, with making money, with getting things done, with focused in creating that we forget our families or people who mean the most to us.

I recently shared the above quote on my blog’s Facebook page and got a lot of comments from people who had similar reactions: the power in the simplicity of this verse is immense and very true. No matter how much success you have, it’s worthless if you loose your family in the process of pursing and acquiring that success. Often, the damage from neglect cannot be repaired.

So, here I am, reminding you (and myself) to reflect upon this quote. Let’s take in its truths, and remember our priorities. Ironically, as I type this, my husband Jeremy comes into my office, holding our son, Ryan, who’s wearing a red turtleneck with his curly brown hair.

“Mama,” Ryan says. They both smile at me. “My two boys. They mean the world to me,” I thought to myself. When I think about them, I can feel my whole being light up in delight, as if in a big smile.

And with that, I’m going to stop working, and get ready to take Ryan to the playground. Oh, how I love sweet, sweet family time.

Life is good.
