Going Green. Bright Green.

St. Patrick's Day is coming up on Wednesday, and I've got my green food coloring ready. People have been celebrating St. Patrick's Day by eating green foods and dying non-green things green since the early 1900's, even before food coloring was invented. For a while, people were using dangerous ingredients like copper salts to do the dye jobs instead.

In fact in 1911, Texas' Food and Drug Commissioner said that many cases of dye poisonings were because of "women's love for pretty colors." Yikes. I'm sure he would lose his job for saying something like that today.

We've made some progress since then. It's safe to dye anything you want "a pretty color." Besides the traditional beer and rivers, you can celebrate St. Patrick's Day by turning all kinds of things green. My favorite bakery was full of "green velvet" cupcakes this morning instead of red velvet. I've made green pancakes, green mashed potatoes, and green rice. Then I used the green dye on and a white shirt with a stain on it. Now it's a green shirt with a stain on it.

Try it! If you haven't dyed anything green in while you might be surprised how fun it is. Something about seeing a bright color in an unexpected, usually bland place just feels festive. And if you decide that random green food is not for you, you can always celebrate by pinching someone who isn't wearing green. Because unfortunately we still haven't progressed past that tradition yet. (Its days are numbered though, they have to be. Pinching? Still? Really?)

What do you have against pinching? Next you'll tell us you don't like playing punch buggy during road trips :(

I found a way past the pinching thing, I got a black belt, now people aren't allowed to pinch me.

Green cupcakes, good. Green milkshakes, good. Green beer, good. Green meat, BAD! Even on St. Patrick's Day :P

Hello,Brigitte.
Sadly, there are several items of "former food" in my refrigerator, which have a green jump on St. Patrick's day.
