Good Mood Moments at BlogHer
Two of my colleagues attended the BlogHer Conference in early August. They came back with notes from great sessions, suitcases of amazing schwag, and dozens of business cards and new contacts. But those weren’t the topics they were most excited to share with the rest of us.
What both Anne and Christian were most enthused about was the overpowering feeling of camaraderie they felt with the rest of the attendees. Women came from all over the world to meet and discuss the experience of being a female blogger. Some talked about balancing the hectic schedule of mommyhood with being a professional blogger. Others explained how they’d risked their lives through their blogs, posting about “forbidden topics” from countries in which freedom of speech isn’t guaranteed.
But no matter where they came from, or what they blogged about, the women at BlogHer spent the long weekend sharing views, listening to each other, and learning from each other. Their stories reminded me just how important it is to develop and nurture friendships with members of our communities – whether it is others in our neighborhoods, at our jobs, or a wider network of online friends.
In the spirit of good mood moments, I asked both Anne and Christian to share their most uplifting memory of the weekend.
Anne’s Good Mood Moment
“At the end of the first day of the conference, there was an art gala in which several parlor rooms had different exhibits people could stroll through and view. What made it especially uplifting and inspiring was that each piece of art had a poster board underneath it where people could write messages on sticky notes and post them to the poster board. It was really neat to see not only these beautiful photographs, drawings, and paintings but also to see the inspiring and awe-inspired messages that the attendees wrote in response to the artwork.”
Christian’s Good Mood Moment
“My moment was from a breakout session titled: Creating Tangible Social Change: How to Move People to Action where Beth from Fake Plastic Fish, Gina from What About Our Daughters & Blogging While Brown, Stephanie, Director of New Media at Blue Star Families and Melissa who founded the site Women and Hollywood talked about their cause or passion and how they’ve used blogging and other social outlets to drive change and to make a difference. I thought about how amazing it must feel to be able to make a change and how well these women hold it together when others publicly bash their views on their own personal web spaces. Their messages inspired me.”
