Good Morning! - How to Start Your Day Off Right
If you ever have those times when it seems like the day is going to be tough to face, all it takes is starting your morning off right to make sure you’ll be in a good mood all day. When I notice someone is cranky or in a bad mood, often they use the excuse, “I got up on the wrong side of the bed.” While seemingly a meaningless phrase, I wonder if those people had gotten their morning off to a good start if they would be in a better mood? I notice that if I do things for myself in the morning, it gets me off to a great start and keeps me in a good mood all day.
Here are some tips of things you can do to make sure you really do have a good morning.
- Get Enough Sleep – Your good morning should START the night before, when you give yourself enough time to get a good night’s sleep. Most adults need between 6.5 and 7.5 hours a night, and much more or less than that can actually be detrimental, according to this article in Time.
- Plan Ahead – Before you hit the sack, it’s a good idea to plan out a few of the things you need to do the next morning. Pick out what clothes you want to wear, make sure your keys and purse are where you know they’ll be the next day, and even prepare what you’d like to eat for breakfast. You’ll find that you won’t be scrambling and scatterbrained in the A.M.
- Healthy Breakfast – Breakfast is definitely the most important meal of the day. Instead of driving through the drive-thru on your way to work, set yourself up for success by eating a healthy breakfast. Fresh fruit or whole grain cereals can give your body the calories and nutrients you need to get going on the right foot.
- Take Your Vitamins – By taking a multivitamin each morning, you can make sure your body is getting a complete array of nutrients and minerals it needs to feel your best. Staying healthy is important to establishing a good mood, and taking vitamins is one part of maintaining good health. The other being…
- Exercise – Just doing a little bit of light exercise in the morning is not only a great way to energize yourself, but it can also help in burning unwanted calories before you even put any in your body. Even doing some light stretching or jumping jacks after you wake up will get your blood flowing and give you some vim and vigor before you even hit the shower.
- Sing in the Shower – Speaking of showers, why not use the time to yourself to express your emotions? Belt out a tune that makes you happy, and don’t worry about anyone caring how loudly or awful you sing. Need an idea for the perfect song to sing? Here’s 100 songs for a good mood.
- Smell the Roses – Instead of concentrating on all the things that might be going wrong in the day early on, try to see things in a positive light. That means taking an extra second or two to see the flowers are blooming or to actually listen to the birds chirping. It can not only stimulate the senses, but help you appreciate the small things in life, too.
- Pep Talk – Every morning, right after you brush your teeth, look yourself in the eye and tell yourself something you want to do today. Tell yourself that nothing is going to keep you from accomplishing that one thing. Giving yourself a pep talk can raise your spirit and give you an attitude adjustment before you even have time to feel cranky or out-of-sorts. Just remember that you can do it, no matter what!
Starting your day right can mean the difference between a good mood and a bad mood, so put yourself in a positive mindset first thing. So the next time you tell someone, “Good Morning!” you’ll really mean it! What do you do to prepare yourself for the day ahead?

Appreciating the small things in life is really important. It can mean the difference between a fantastic day and a bad day. For instance, if you work in public service like me, sometimes people can be cross with you and ruin your day. But instead of letting it get you down, notice the light in their eyes when the talk, or remember the other customers who gave you a warm smile.
