Help Yourself Fall Asleep Faster

One of the main influences on my mood is how rested I am. When I'm tired, I'm easily distracted and frustrated. But getting enough sleep isn't always as easy as going to bed early ... just because I get into bed 8 hours before my alarm clock goes off doesn't mean I'll be well rested if I toss and turn for 3 hours before I actually fall asleep.

Here are four easy ways to help yourself fall asleep faster. (Basically, you just need to treat yourself like a huge baby.)

1. Keep a notepad next to your bed. As you fall asleep, write down any thoughts that come to mind of things you need to do the next day or other concerns you need to let go of while you sleep. It's worth it to turn the light back on and sit up to jot down a few reminders and have your mind at ease. Kind of like checking for monsters under the bed instead of just wondering whether they're there the whole night long.

2. Take a hot bath or shower before bed. The heat will relax tense muscles you didn't even know you had. If you really want to get into it, use lavender-scented soaps, a naturally relaxing aromatherapy technique used in spas.

3. Get a bedtime routine going. If you always do x,y,z, and then go to sleep, your body will eventually start to relax and get sleepy after you do x and y. Just like the Pavlovian dog drooling at the bell.

4. Don't drink caffeine after dinner. This one is just pure chemistry. Caffeine is a stimulant and stimulants and sleep don't mix.

I was always told that taking a shower before you go to bed will keep you awake.

am told that rigorous exercise particularly the intimate kind works rather well

as a rule people that have jobs that require much determined effort towards a consistently laborious task have the best night's rest

I agree with Joe436 taking a shower before sleep drives sleep away from me toooo... infact i used to do it during studies .... would just take a shower at 10 pm and then easily study till 3 am...

a hot bath is a really splendid way to feel at ease with dim lighting or candles and a tall glass of beverage -it's actually quite perfect after a sauna ~kinda wish i had a personal masseuse

I agree with everything that was said, but also have heard that showering will keep you awake; my boyfriend said it does that to him until the middle of the night too.

I do agree with all the other options though, and also like to add meditation, lavender on my pillow, essential oil on my heart or body, deep breathing, sometimes homeopathics or flower essences, reiki or energy healing while I'm in bed, saying a mantra, and maybe a prayer.
