How to Find Your Creative Outlet

Everyone has the potential to create. I hear people all the time say, “I’m just not a creative person.” Well, I think everyone has a touch of creativity, but they might not have discovered the right outlet yet. I’m sure a lot of people are held back by the fact that they believe no one else will think what they do is “good.” Creating and being artistic aren’t things that should be done to impress others, though, they should be endeavors you do because of how they make YOU feel.

A great way to put yourself in a great mood is by expressing YOUR creativity. There are plenty of ways you can tap into your creative outlet, even if you think you aren’t “creative.” Here are a few tips I put together for finding your creative outlet:

•    Doodle – I remember those long, sometimes boring days sitting in class and trying to pay attention to what the teacher was saying. Instead of constant note taking, I would find myself doodling squiggles and little cartoon faces on the margins of my notebooks. While none of the doodles I did were worthy of putting up in any gallery, it was still fun to just get my mind away from Algebra lectures. As it turns out, though, doodling can be a great thing to keep your brain on task. What seems like a mindless distraction is actually a great way to stay focused, and might even help inspire you to create more.

•    Knit – I’ve never spent much time knitting, but not only is it a great stress relief, but a chance for you to create something beautiful and useful as well. Knitting is easy to learn, and once you have the basics down, there is no limit to what you can create. One of my favorite gifts is a hand knit scarf given to me by a friend. I love it because I know she made it, and even though it has minor imperfections, that’s one of the things that makes it so special.

•    Ceramics & Pottery – If you’ve ever thought that making ceramics is just something for 5th grade art classes, think again. Making ceramics and pottery isn’t as difficult as it might appear, but it is something you have to dedicate a little time to. Nonetheless, there are plenty of online resources if you are interested in getting started in working with clay and glaze. And taking a class with a local potter is another great way to meet new friends while learning something new.  And who knows, you might even be able to sell your crafts online. Check out Etsy for some ideas.

•    Learn to Play an Instrument – The virtuosos in any of your favorite bands didn’t just pick up a guitar and suddenly know how to play. Learning an instrument can take years to master, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t choose an instrument that you will love to learn. One of the best parts of learning an instrument is that you can do it at your own pace, and either teach yourself or take lessons from an expert.

•    Use What You’ve Got - Finding your creative outlet isn’t limited to the tools at your disposal, though. All you really need is your body and you can express yourself. Dancing, martial arts, and singing are all ways of expressing yourself creatively. There’s even a fun art form known as Capoeira that encompasses all three. Who knows, you might even discover a hidden talent that you might not have known about otherwise.

How do you like to express yourself creatively? Let me know in the comments section.

Gardening Flowers or Vegetables has always been my families favorite outlet we have flora that date back to my great great grandparents gardens!
I agree with all your other suggestions and it has got my brain going on the things I used to enjoy.
