How to Get Things Done
“If you want to make an easy job seem mighty hard, just keep putting off doing it.“
~Olin Miller
Following the theme of “How to Get Things Done,” I want to highlight a simple way we can get the important things done.
These steps are really simple to follow and you can see some dramatic results in your life if you take it to heart and actually do them.
Problem happens when we allow procrastination to sneak in. When we start to allow procrastination to leak in, we end up wasting so much energy thinking about all that we have to do, instead of actually doing those things.
Procrastination is truly an energy sucker.
Okay, let’s dive into these simple steps.
1. Brain Dump
Make a habit to dump all that you need to do on paper. Write it down instead of thinking about it. This is your master to-do list. We later decide what to do by reviewing this list.
2. Pick Just One Important Item
Pick just one item from your to-do list. Pick the one task that will give you the biggest reward—fulfillment, enjoyment or financial reward. Pick something that makes you excited. Pick something that will feel really good to complete. You might need to break the task into smaller chunks, and then commit to do just one of the chunks today.
3. Make it the First Priority Before Doing Anything Else
Many people like myself have the habit of checking email first thing in the morning. This is bad, because I get sidetracked into the demands for my attention in areas that are not the most important to me. A whole day can go by without me taking action in the projects that are truly important to me. And then I feel guilty.
The trick is to do your most important task, your most creative job first thing in the morning, before doing anything else.
4. Just Get Started
Even if you feel resistance to take action, just force yourself to get started. Once you get started the momentum will build to make it easier to keep doing it.
5. Do It Everyday
Create a habit to take one small action every single day. By doing so, regardless of how small the step is, you are creating the habitual patterns in your brains, which will make it easier to take action in the future with less resistance.
