How to Laugh at Yourself

Sometimes you might feel like you can't seem to do anything right, or that your bad day won't get any better. Instead of sinking further into a bad mood, learn how to laugh at yourself and get into a good one right away.

Step 1 – Identify the Situation – Say your day is going horribly. You can’t seem to get anything done, everyone is taking out his or her gripes on you, and now you’ve locked yourself in the office. What else can go wrong? Well, nothing actually. And that’s the beauty of it. Your situation is slightly absurd, so instead of getting angry or sad about it, just take it for what it is.

Step 2 – Just say “So What?” – So you had a lousy day. Big deal! Life will go on. There’s no reason to brood or get downtrodden, because when it all comes down to it, most of those niggling little issues that put you in a bad mood don’t mean anything in the long run. How many times have you thought, “Now I don’t even remember why I was so upset in the first place!”?

Step 3 – Look Back at This and Laugh, Right Now – You’ve definitely heard that popular adage, “someday, we’ll look back at this and laugh!” Well instead of looking back someday, just look at how silly it is to be upset at something so inconsequential and do your best to get over it. Don’t dwell on the negative; just think about the next fun thing you’re going to do.

Step 4 – Make Yourself Smile – My dad used to be able to cheer me up no matter what with one simple move: he’d dare me not to smile. I would be so concentrated on NOT smiling that eventually I would just burst out laughing. If you ever find yourself in a perpetual frown, try doing something incredibly silly or out-of-character just to make yourself smile. Pretty soon, you’ll be cracking yourself up and you won’t know what made you upset in the first place.

Learning to laugh at yourself starts with these simple things, and if they don’t work the first time around, just rinse and repeat. What are some of the ways that you laugh at yourself?
