How to Take a Compliment
I’ve written in the past about ways to find your greatness, and one of those ways is to learn how to take a compliment. Compliments happen because someone else admires something about you. It is easy to put up a defense when you don’t feel like you deserve the compliment, but those nice things people say can sure put you in a great mood if you let them.

- Be Gracious – When someone pays you a compliment, the best thing you can do is to say “thank you.” Giving someone a compliment can be something people struggle with in general, so it takes a bit of confidence even to give someone else words of praise. So if someone does pay you a compliment, be sure to be gracious and not defensive.
- Be a Friend – Maybe someone has paid you a compliment, not because they are looking to make you feel better because you might feel bad, but because they want to be a friend. Don’t deny that friendship. It is more than likely that the compliment has come from a place of sincerity, and so you should cherish that.
- Reciprocate – An easy way to take a compliment is by returning the favor. Or better yet, beat your friend to the punch by extending some words of kindness and appreciation to them. Your words will be appreciated, and likely reciprocated as well.
- Realize that you are Great – Someone is paying you a compliment because they mean it. They find something in you that they feel is worth complimenting. They don’t have to do it; they do it because you deserve it. A compliment can really brighten your day if you let it. Just take a cue from the compliment guys, two Perdue students who dole out free kind words to any and everyone who wants them. To quote Cameron Brown, one of the compliment guys, "Giving a compliment is pretty easy, really. Everybody has something to compliment. Everybody has something good in them. It just takes a second to find it."
Taking a compliment is not as complicated as we make it out to be. So the next time someone tells you they like your shoes, or the way your hair looks, just say “thanks!” and return the favor. By the way, you look nice today.
