Keeping Yourself Interesting

Every year in late winter, I get that vague itch for change that we all get sometimes. At first I say it's the feeling of wanting to go on vacation. But it's the same feeling I get as when I want a new haircut even though there's nothing wrong with my hair. And then sometimes instead of changing my hair I end up rearranging my furniture. Or maybe a buying a package of new socks.

As much as I would probably deny it while in the middle of one of these antsy moods, I know that this restless feeling has more to do with me being bored with myself than with my surroundings or my haircut. It's a scary thought to think you might be becoming boring to yourself. You have to spend all day with you.

In my experience, the best way of getting out of this "I'm bored with me" funk is the most obvious: I make me more interesting to myself.

Usually when I get that vague craving for change, it's because it's been too long since I've spent time doing the things that I like to think define me. For example I like to think of myself as a person who is an amateur astronomer, and someone that collects seashells, volunteers with animal rescue, who reads a lot. I like those things about myself. If enough time passes and I don't make room in my schedule to do these things or any of the other things that build a positive picture of myself in my mind, then of course I get a little bored and unsure of myself.

Make time to do things that the best possible version of yourself would do, and stay involved in causes and interests that mean something to you.  If you need a jumpstart, bookmark web pages with local listings for rotating museum exhibitions, guest speakers, and live music in your area.

I totally agree with today's subject. I would like to add a suggestion for those who are on a budget and must consider "cost". With regards to attending museums, or galleries often these attractions will have a 1/2 priced day, or offer free admission on certain days and times. For example both the Royal Ontario Museum & Art Gallery of Ontario offer free admission during on Wednesday (check the websites for times). I also know that the larger public libraries will sometimes host free public lectures (the ones I have attended are all science related). Universities as well will host free lectures once again science related sponsored by a non-for-profit science organization. Oh and you can always check out the "attractions" website of your province/state because they should offer e-coupons to galleries and museums as well. One last thing if you're a member of CAA/AAA you can get discounted tickets to a bunch of stuff; saving money is great! :)

Hello,Brigitte.
I think this feeling of wanting to change things, shake them up, may be tied into a realization that spring is coming. As the new season approaches,we want to start adjusting things in our lives, so we have that "fresh" feeling, and outlook on life.

I usually feel like that around my birthday. I'll have to try this approach when it comes up in a few months.

This is my favorite blog, yet.
It's so easy to define myself as someone who does yoga, tends to my garden and bakes for friends. But when I havent done that for a while, I start to feel less like me.
I will strive to be the best possible version of me, this week.

A very simple, yet astute observation that is much appreciated.

Cheers!
