Living Passionately
“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who are alive.”
~Howard Thurman
This is one of my favorite quotes. In fact, I love it so much, that I use it in my email signature as a personal reminder.
I get tremendous joy from being alive! I bask in the beauty of the little things--the small gifts bestowed on me each day. A sunrise, a hug from my son, a walk in the park with my dogs, an extra hot, no-foam vanilla latte at my favorite neighborhood café, the birds singing outside my window, digging in the dirt in the garden. These simple things make me high on life.
However, I do periodically find myself getting caught up in the whole perfection mindset. I get stuck in the head and mired down in the details and logistics. When I adopt this mindset, I begin to lose sight of the bounty of my life and focus on what I do not have, instead of all that I do, and I start to feel empty and depleted.
Here is the great thing. This only happens if I let it. I have the control of where I choose to put my focus. And when I focus on what I love and what makes my heart sing I come alive. It is that simple! I don’t know why sometimes I make it so complicated.
For me, when I feel love, when I walk outside breathing in the fresh air, when I express gratitude, when I listen to music, and when I write to inspire, I honor who I am and I come fully alive. It is just these five simple things, which are all I need to fill up my emotional and energy tank from the inside.
Sure, I could get caught up in excess and try to add more and more--with things like excessive food, work, overspending, and grasping for other ultimately meaningless stuff.
The type of fuel that comes from outside of myself always leaves me feeling empty in the long run. It feels borrowed and fake and does not honor my inner and authentic self. So, for now, I will just focus on those five things and do them.
Ah! Bliss!
