Make Work Fun Again: Things to Keep You in a Good Mood at the Office
I’ve always been a bit of a “card” as some might say, so it is no secret that I enjoy some good shenanigans from time to time. If your office ever makes work feel too much like work, here are some suggestions to liven things up.

- Party On! – One great way to get everyone smiling and (hopefully) productive is by easing the tension and having a good old-fashioned party. You might not be able to crack open a bottle of bubbly at the office, so you’ll have to rely on games, food and conversation to get you through. Games like “Coworker Trivia” or a simple scavenger hunt can get everyone excited and help them learn about teamwork at the same time. Here’s a list of 25 HR approved office party ideas to get you started.
- Play Around – In our office, we have these foam arrows and rubber frogs that we sling at one another, constantly keeping each other on our toes. It’s a lot of fun, and it makes taking your mind off the grind a lot easier when there are toys around. If your office could use a little fun in the form of playthings, check out ThinkGeek for some interesting and fun items like Drumstick Pencils or the Takeout Menu Organizer.
- Give a Gift – Speaking of office toys, one way to win over your coworkers is by giving a gift, either in secret or as some sort of reward. Need some ideas of what to get your coworker? Check out this post on office gifts that are fun and useful, which includes cool ideas like Bucky Balls, a cordless phone charger, or even a personalized rhinestone mug.
- Dining Out – Even if it isn’t the whole group, try to rally at least a few of your coworkers to go out to eat once a week. While you’re there, promise not to complain about work to one another. You’ll all come back with a new enthusiasm and ready to get back to the grind with a newfound good mood. It sure beats eating lunch in your cubicle.
- Harmless Pranks – Anyone who has seen “The Office” knows the pranks that Jim has pulled on Dwight through the years. While many of them can be a little cruel, there are a few that can be harmless fun. For example, we covered a coworker’s desk and computer in tinfoil one year on his birthday. He didn’t get upset, but we all got a good laugh out of him finding everything from his stapler to his trashcan wrapped in tin foil.
The office doesn’t have to be dull. You can share the time you spend at work with your coworkers rather than keeping your nose to the grindstone all day. Work is called “work” for a reason, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun, too.

I am glad someone else appreciates fun at work syndrome.
I call it a syndrome as My past experiences working with a bunch of stiffs with no personalities and joy for life kinda sucked the life out of me. Man' We are under appreciated.
That is why I chose to work at home and am loving it. I can be light hearted and creative and my customers seem to get a kick out of the tool I am.
