Morning Brain Dump

When I embarked on my journey of personal development a few years ago, I discovered many useful tools that can be incorporated into our lives to bring more peace and wellbeing.

One habit I use to cultivate ideas is something I call “The Morning Brain Dump.” I believe that the state we begin our morning in affects the rest of our day. And when we wake up in the morning, we have random thoughts swimming in our minds that can be a source of distraction throughout our day.

So, in the morning, after I wake up, my routine looks something like this: I grab a tall glass of water or tea and go sit at my dining room table with a pen and a journal.

I then spend five to ten minutes emptying my mind of random thoughts. I basically write down on a piece of paper, in verbatim, every thought that comes to mind. What you write doesn’t have to make sense, or be in proper sentences. The important thing is to write without editing or judging. Thus, the name brain “dump.”

On many mornings, I am often surprised by the negative thoughts swimming around in my mind. But I keep writing and keep dumping out what’s in my head. Often times, after a few minutes of the initial “chaos” of random thoughts, my brain quiets down. When I feel mentally “empty” and “quiet,” I stop. When you try this for the first time, listen to your intuition. You will know when it’s time to stop.

This habit has brought a whole new level of clarity into my day, and I’ve found it to be a useful tool that allows me to begin my day with peace, clarity and silence. When the mental noise subsides, we can then hear our inner voice, always wise, always right.
