National Bike or Walk to Work Week!

Happy Monday! Today marks the first day of National Bike or Walk to Work Week. As you could probably guess from the very straightforward name, it's a week where you try to bike or walk to work, instead of drive.

What nice timing, since a recent study suggested that time spent in nature can significantly boost your mood. Spending just five minutes outside can make you feel better about life in general, and about yourself.

Why not combine this idea with biking or walking to work? You could get a mood boost and a bit of exercise just before starting your work day and just after, the times you may need it most. Plus, you'll be reducing your carbon footprint!

Many people are surprised to find out that a bicycle commute to their workplace actually takes less time than driving there. And even if it takes slightly longer for you, remember walking or biking to work is a workout as well as a commute, so that can save you time at the gym later. If it's just too far to walk or bike, how about taking public transportation part of the way, and walking the rest?

National Bike or Walk to Work Week is not primarily about boosting your mood, but the environment. So even if distance or other circumstances prevent you from biking or walking to your job, you can take part by leaving your car at home by any other means possible - for instance, taking public transportation or carpooling.

Try it for at least one day this week! As a freelancer I don't have an office to commute to, but there are several local coffeeshops that I sometimes use as an office. I'm going to try walking to one today (looking out the window, looks like I'll be walking in the rain.)

Oh, thanks for that info. It's unfortunate I work on the top of a very huge hill and at 4AM so, biking and walking are not so much an option. But, I will keep this mind since I can walk other places. There definitely is something refreshing about being outside even if it's only for a few minutes. Kinda reminds you that there is so much more....
Anyway, hope you didn't get rained on!

Only way to get to work is going over a river and the only three bridges don't have a bike lane. I haven't ridden a bike since I was in collge, so this is probably a good thing. On the upside I only have a 13 mile commute so I'm not wasting that much gas.

Hello,Brigitte.
Years back, I worked closer to my home. I would ride to work 3 times a week. Not so much to be "green" but, because I like riding.
Now, The best I can do, is carpool with a friend, who works near where I work. I have toyed with the idea of baskets on my bike, and riding to the grocery store nearby. My only concern, is having a secure spot to chain my bike.
