7 New Year’s Resolutions You Can Actually Keep

If you’ve ever thought that you failed at your New Years resolution, you’re not alone. Whether it is saying “I’m going to lose 30 pounds in 3months!” or something equally as ridiculous, when you make bold statements like that, you’re ultimately setting yourself up for failure. And even if you get a good start on your resolution, the hardest part is making it last on into the year. So this year, instead of setting lofty expectations for yourself, make some resolutions on a smaller scale so you can actually keep them. Here are 7 things you can do to assure yourself that you’ll get past the first few months with your resolution still fully intact.

1. Portion Control – Over the holidays (which are now technically over, by the way) it is easy to give in to having extra treats or second helpings. But now that it’s the New Year, it might be time to keep an eye on just how much you are eating. If you find yourself being “soo full” after every meal, then it might be time to cut back on your portion size. This is something that can be done over time or right away, but once you get into the habit, you won’t even know why you were overeating in the first place.

2. Go the Distance – One way you can work on that fitness goal you set is by doing a little more exercise than you are used to. If your problem is time, then you can make simple tweaks in your current routine to get the most physical activity with the least amount of going out of your way. For instance, park farther away from your office or the grocery store so you have to walk more to get inside. It might even be more time efficient then driving around looking for a spot anyway.

3. Smile –This blog is all about ways of maintaining your good mood naturally. One of the ways you can put yourself instantly in a good mood is by doing the simple act of smiling. Besides, what could be easier?

4. Think Positively – If you ever find your mood swinging back and forth, don’t let your mind wander to think negative thoughts. See the glass half full, or better yet, think how great it is that there is something in the glass to begin with. It doesn’t take much effort to start positive thinking if you aren’t already.

5. Be a Friend – Recently, I received a text message from a friend that simply said, “I miss you.” It was a very simple gesture on her behalf, but it meant a lot to me. Just by going out of your way to be a friend will do great things for your mood and the positivity of others.

6. Have Fun – This one should be easy. It SHOULD be easy, but that doesn’t mean it always is. You don’t have to go out of your way to have fun, necessarily, but instead try to find the fun in the things you already do. If you’ve got a tedious job, try to make a game out of it. Set a goal for yourself each hour and then try to top that goal.

7. Stop Complaining – Face it, it’s time to stop being a “whino.” If you find yourself complaining too often, or even at all, just give yourself some reminder that you’re doing it. If it helps, get a friend involved who can sound a buzzer every time she hears you griping about the things that bug you. You don’t want to become the negative Nancy that people will avoid.

What are you planning for your own New Year’s resolutions? How can maintaining a positive mood naturally help you accomplish the things you want to achieve?
