Our Most Valuable Resource

"Somebody should tell us, right at the start of our lives, that we are dying. Then we might live life to the limit, every minute of every day. Do it! I say. Whatever you want to do, do it now. There are only so many tomorrows." ~Michael Landon

You know, it’s funny, but so many of us seem to walk through life as if we will live forever. We rarely stop to think about our mortality until some catastrophic event that shifts our focus back to the fact that we will not live forever and that we have a limited amount of time on this earth.

Lately, I’ve been pondering on this idea of how precious and limited our time is. Unlike money, time is the only non-renewable resource we have. Time cannot be replenished, nor can it be reset. What is used will be in the past, and you can never get it back.

How we spend our time—this limited and precious resource—makes up our life, and determines the quality of our experience. So, next time someone asks for your time, remember that they are asking for a piece of your life. Give yourself to people who are worthy of your time instead of reluctantly agreeing to do things you don’t want to do.

On a similar note, given that we have a limited amount of time on this planet, is it worth it to spend our precious resource being angry, holding grudges, feeling jealousy, consuming in guilt, or feeling bad about something that happened in the past? Is it productive? Is it worthy of your scarce resource of time?

Next time you find yourself dwelling in these unproductive feelings, ask yourself, “Do I really want to spend my limited time on earth feeling this way?”
