Path to Happiness Through Photography
My husband and I recently each got a new iPhone after our ancient cell phones-- miraculously and mysteriously—died within the same week.
The thing that surprised us about the new phone is its ability to take pretty high quality photos, and as a result ignited the flame for my passion for photography again. It’s a nice feeling.

My husband and I are both professional photographers, and we own some heavy-duty photo gears. It might be the large size of our cameras and lenses, but we rarely take them out to use for personal use.
Living with a 1-year old boy, whenever we go out, we already have so much baby paraphernalia with us that the thought of bringing our digital SLR cameras sounds like total torture. So we don’t.
With these new cell phones, it’s a different story. Since they’re our phones, we end up carrying them around with us. This means that we always have a camera nearby when we feel inspired to take a snapshot.
We recently took a trip to Cincinnati, and on a Sunday walk around the city we were blown away by the simple beauties we were able to capture on our phones that we otherwise would have missed.
With Ryan strapped around my chest, and my husband pushing his stroller, we spent the whole day walking around downtown Cincinnati, stopping every few minutes to take a photo. It was fun.
It’s amazing what we’ll find when we look at ordinary objects and buildings from a slightly different perspective: they transform from something simple to something magnificent and beautiful.
Art is all around us. All we have to do in order to see them is to turn on our creative radars to recognize them.
I’m amazed at how much joy a little technology gadget can bring to my overall happiness.
I can’t wait to explore my own city with this new perspective after we return home to Seattle.
In tomorrow’s post, I’ll share some photos from our Cincinnati trip.
Until then, if you have a camera on your phone (or consider carrying a small camera with you wherever you go), start paying attention to the visual details around you. You may just be surprised with what you will find—beautiful details, lines, colors and textures.
