Playtime at Dusk
Summer is here, and it has brought along with it all the things to put us in great moods. One of my fondest childhood memories is playing outside in the summer right before nightfall, when the grass was still warm to my bare feet, fireflies everywhere. I’d ride my bike up to a lake not far from our house, and I can remember cool sweat on my forehead in the late summer heat as I pedaled to watch the water sparkle underneath the glow of the setting sun. Sounds of crickets chirping and toads croaking echoed in the air, and the smell of mud and charcoal wafted in the breeze.
I think about this because it evokes a simpler time, full of hope and solitude, realizing that the world was an enormous place and I was only a small part of it. Instead of feeling small and alone, though, I felt special and beautiful.
Nowadays, I’ll catch the scent of rain or a grill somewhere in the distance, and everything from those days comes pouring back into my mind. It brings a smile to my face and gives me that sleepy heaviness in my eyes the way it used to those August evenings in my youth.
Sometimes activating your good mood only takes accessing that part of your memory that holds all the moments of innocence and simplicity. Think back, what are some of the times of your life that you can always turn to in order to find a smile?

ah....as I sit here at dusk, looking at the flowers outside of the window of my office, and listening to the birds bringing in the evening...your post resonates with simplicity. Virginia
