Pumpkin Carving - Stencils and Techniques

Carving a Jack-O-Lantern can be a fun way to spend a cool October afternoon with friends or family. Here's a guide and a few patterns to make the process fun and simple.

Choose Your Tools – When you set out to carve a pumpkin in hopes of making an awesome Jack-O-Lantern, you need to make sure you have the right tools for the job. A sharp knife is a good place to start, but if you plan to do any detailed artwork, you might need an X-acto® blade or a paring knife. Be careful, though, as the pumpkin’s tough skin can provide a lot of resistance and you don’t want your carving experience to extend to your own body.

Get a Stencil – One option for pumpkin carving is to draw the face you want to carve on the pumpkin with a magic marker or grease pencil. Another option is to use a stencil. For some quick ideas for fun stencils, check out these simple but scary family friendly stencils. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can also try your hand at creating a stencil of your own using Photoshop® or similar photo editing software. Here’s a fun video that will show you how to create one: Create Pumpkin a Carving Pattern.

Scoop it Out – Perhaps one of the harder parts of pumpkin carving is the surgery you must first perform to get out all the seeds and goo inside. Trace a circle around the top of the pumpkin that is wide enough that you can get a hand inside to scoop out the insides. I like to use an ice cream scoop, which helps to remove the insides cleanly and quickly. If you’re wondering what to do with all the seeds, I suggest toasting them for a delicious snack.

Cut it Out – Now all that you need to do is trace your stencil and get to cutting. I’m no expert at the step-by-step process, but luckily, there are a few great guides online. Get some friends together or get the whole family involved if you want, but don’t let the kids do any carving without close adult supervision.

Pumpkin carving is a fun family activity, and the results of your labor are sure to put you in a great mood. Remember, though, rule #1 is safety first! Have any tips you want to share? Let me know in the comments.
