Quotation Tuesday 7!

Hello, and happy Quotation Tuesday. I'm writing this post from the tiny town of Cayucos, CA. I'll post a photo blog tomorrow to show you a little of what I've been up to, exploring the the central coast. It's absolutely beautiful.

Today's quote is by the Canadian poet Henry Drummond.

"You will find as you look back upon your life that the moments when you have really lived are the moments when you have done things in the spirit of love."

One of the bummers about growing up is that it seems to automatically bring with it the heavy realization that life is short and we are supposed to "live life to its fullest." Only we don't know what that means and it's easy to feel like we're just running around missing chances, ruining good things, wasting time, falling short of potential, losing our focus, or we're just generally doing it wrong. Life.

I like the Drummond quote because it makes me brave. It takes away regrets and paints sad memories in a sweeter light. And it makes me feel optimistic even when I'm in my most cynical of moods.

It also takes a bit of the pressure off. It's a reminder that maybe some of the times you felt you were going about life all wrong were actually the times you were experiencing life the most; living it to its fullest.  The times you lost sleep, gave when you couldn't afford to, said a little too much about how much you cared, made a scene, swallowed your pride, did things the hard way… if you did them in the spirit of love, then these are the stories you'll tell and smile when you're old.

Going forward from here, I will try to remember that. And it will help me weed out the things that truly are a waste of time from the things worth doing unapologetically.

I learn more about God
From weeds than from roses;
Resilience springing
Through the smallest chink of hope
In the absolute of concrete....
