SAM-e, Mood and More
Guest writer Shannon Wright, Nature Made registered dietitian, is here to talk about the basics of SAM-e.
Even with the best intentions, our diets may not be providing all we need to achieve optimal health. SAM-e is a supplement that could possibly be a missing link in your quest for health and well-being.
Have you ever heard of SAM-e? As people are becoming more proactive regarding health, supplements like SAM-e are becoming better known. SAM-e is reaching audiences in health care arenas, as well as the general population.
It sounds complicated, but it’s really not. SAM-e, pronounced “SAMMY”, is a part of every cell. Our body converts the amino acid methionine - a building block for protein - to SAM-e in the cell. SAM-e is important for many functions in the body. The most exciting benefits are in the area of mood, joints and liver health. SAM-e was discovered in the 1970s in Italy. It is currently sold by prescription only in Europe, but I won’t bore you with a history lesson. The exciting point is there have been over 30 years of research documenting the benefits of SAM-e and now it is available without a prescription in the United States.
I often get asked, “Why would I need to supplement if my body makes SAM-e?” The answer is that the conversion from methionine (from food) to SAM-e may not be as effective in some people due to aging, poor nutrition or other factors.
