Shift Our Views to Shift Our Moods
“We see people and things not as they are, but as we are.” ~ Anthony de Mello
Given any situation, there are always multiple ways to perceive it. Some perceptions cause us to feel bad, while a slight twist in the angle from which we perceive the story can result in a quick lift in our mood.

Some people tend to see the goodness that surrounds them, while others are established in complaining and living with a habitual pattern of noticing all that is wrong around them. It’s not that the latter group consists of bad people; it’s just that they’ve formed thinking patterns that are not necessarily conducive to well-being. Over time, these thinking patterns become habits.
I love how Anthony de Mello reminds me of this, reminding me that how I respond to the outside world is a reflection of my inner world.
I think that most of us fall in between the two extremes, we have our moments of handling situations from a positive perspective, and sometimes, when we are caught off-guard, we may react in ways we’re not proud of. It happens to us all.
The key is awareness. Be aware that in these moments of reaction, we may be feeling stressed or anxious or overloaded with information. Our reaction to things is a reflection of our inner state.
While Emerson says “People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.” I am a believer that our character can be changed to best suit the person we want to become.
