Simplify

The benefits of simplicity have been a between-the-lines recurring theme in my blogs over the past several months.

I think one of the biggest causes of strife/anxiety/angst for this generation and every generation before it has been different versions of the same thing: how do we hold on to what's real & good in our lives in the middle of neverending, unstoppable change?

This morning the internet was buzzing with live coverage of the Apple news conference, always a flurry of exciting gadget announcements and tech advances. Technology CAN make our lives simpler and allow us to make authentic connections that are very real. As impressed as we all were with the latest fanciness from this morning's news conference, it was interesting to me that one of the most talked about revalations was  simply two people chatting in sign language. Real people. Talking in real time. When they couldn't before.

The farther technology and science advances the clearer it seems to say that simple is better for you. Simpler food: raw, less processed, less treated. Simpler lifestyle: less stress, less less artificial ups and downs.

There's a Quaker dance song called "Simple Gifts" written in 1884 (yikes!) that starts out with the lyrics "'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis a gift to be free..."

Quakers in 1884 were yearning for simplicity.

Simple is always better

I love that Quaker song! I used to sing it all the time as a little boy in my Catholic grade school. Extra loud too!

Thanks for the reminder and the life lesson!

But, I am going to get an iPhone 4.

They could before if they had PCs with webcams.

simplicity hurts the ego.

we tend to flatter ourselves and inflate our sense of self-importance.

perhaps the only species that laughs at the misfortunes of others and finds gratification in cruel debasement or dehumanizing each others vulnerabilities

@Eric You got me. They couldn't do it before so spontaneously though. I know I usually don't have my computer with me most of the time. :)
