Spring Break! – Take Time Away from Technology
This spring, I’m going to take a different kind of break. I am as guilty as anyone of spending too much time in front of a monitor. With the spring upon us, there is no time like the present to take technology out of the equation for a little while. Turn off your phone, turn off your computer, and turn off your TV. This spring, take a break from technology.

- Take a Hike – The great outdoors is everywhere. Even if you live in a populated, urban area like New York City, there is still opportunity to get outside and enjoy some nature in Central Park. Make it a point to get out from behind your desk for a little while, and you’ll see how quickly those little tidbits of nature really come out to shine. Nothing will make you realize how much you depend on technology until you immerse yourself in nature. It’s also a great way to spend time with your kids when you decide to explore nature together.
- Have a Conversation – No, I’m not talking about instant messaging or email or social networking. I’m talking about sitting down with a friend or loved one and having an honest to goodness conversation. Talk about life and dreams and pets and family. Don’t let the last funny thing you saw online be the subject of your chat.
- Go See Live Theater – We sure love our movies. We love our TV shows and our Internet videos and our cell phones, too. But when was the last time you saw a live performance? Whether it is a Shakespearean play or a dance performance or even a stand-up comedy show, live theater shows are unique experiences and can really exemplify how much talent and preparation go into each and every aspect of creative performance.
- Tell a Story – I have fond memories of sitting around a campfire and telling stories, scary or otherwise, and I’d love to hear them again. Like I mentioned before, having a conversation with a friend is one way to get away from technology, but having a group of friends over for stories of times gone by is really a great way to reconnect with those you care about. And the springtime means that those evenings on the porch with friends and neighbors leave everyone smiling and warm.
Springtime is a time for renewal and revitalization, so take advantage of that and reconnect with your world in a way that doesn’t require an Ethernet cable.
