The State of Your Mood
A few months ago, President Barack Obama gave his State of the Union speech, and Americans everywhere tuned in to listen and watch. It was a chance for the president to evaluate and address some of the things weighing on the minds of Americans. But what about you, personally? What state are you in? What’s the state of your mood? Here are some questions you can use to examine your own mood.

Take Stock – The first part of this process should involve you taking stock of your own feelings and general attitude right now.
- What makes me smile?
- Who are the people I feel most comfortable around?
- What do I get excited about when I start my day?
- What makes me laugh?
- What word would I use to describe my mood?
Rewind – Now take a look back at how things have evolved over time. You might be surprised at how much things have changed in the past few years.
- How was your general mood this time last year?
- How about 5 years ago?
- How have things changed since then?
- Are you happier about your life now than before?
- What people are important to you now?
Look Ahead – Since you’ve evaluated your past and your present, now it is time to look ahead to what you can do in the future to assure yourself that your mood stays positive.
- Where do I want to be in 5 years?
- Who do I want to continue to spend time with?
- What endeavors do I see myself pursuing?
- Why are the goals I have important to me?
- Why is maintaining a positive mood beneficial?
Once you answer these questions for yourself, it may become easier to understand the state of your mood.
