Summer Fun at a Baseball Game and How I Got My New Talisman

My friend Megan, who is perpetually in a good mood, told me recently about her trip to a local baseball game. I thought the story was so inspiring that I asked her to share it with the SAM-e Complete Good Mood Blog readers. Here’s her take on summer fun at a baseball game. - Lisa

Baseball games are one of the best symbols of summer. They inspire feel-good flicks like Angels in the Outfield and The Sandlot and classic warm-weather tunes, like The Boys are Back in Town. Baseball games also make for an exciting afternoon or evening activity to enjoy with friends and family. If you haven’t been to one yet this summer, I highly recommend it. Seats to AAA games can be very reasonable, and some parks even do fireworks on the weekends.

This year I attended a local baseball team’s season opener with a group of friends. It was the perfect evening – the temperature was nestled between spring and summer, the air smelled like hot dogs and popcorn, and a chorus of pops and cracks filled the air as baseballs became acquainted with the home team’s wooden bats.

A few rounds of “the wave” can really build up an appetite, so I went to the concession stands in the middle of the second inning and bought a giant plate of nachos and plastic cup of lemonade. Back at my seat, I was preparing to take my first bite just as my team’s mascot hurled a baseball into my section of the stands. My hand-eye coordination is on par with an average three-year-old, so it’s a good thing the ball was plush. It landed right on my head, bounced off, and fell into the lap of someone behind me.

I guess he felt bad for my awkward catching skills, because the man behind me gave me the baseball. I’m not the biggest fan of tchotchkes, but then I noticed what was printed on my new toy.

“KRAFT Singles.”

Okay, maybe it was just an advertisement for a brand of cheese, but to me, the words on my new plush baseball meant more than that. Here I was at one of my favorite events; it was sunset in the summertime; I was with a good group of friends, and a keepsake lands on my head, reminding me (in so many words) to craft a single: to make something special out of the one life I was given and to be happy to be single, for now.

I keep my KRAFT Singles ball on my desk at work, and whenever I need a mood boost, it reminds me that I’m in ultimate control of crafting a life that I can be proud of. I call it my “talisman” (I guess I can be a little cheesy too).

I don’t get such revelations from every baseball game I attend, but I do always have a good time. The summer air, the seventh inning stretch, and round after round of the wave always put me in a good mood. I’d love to hear about your good times at the ballgame. What about baseball puts you in a good mood?
