The Power of Belief

“A belief is only a thought you continue to think. A belief is nothing more than a chronic pattern of thought, and you have the ability --if you try even a little bit-- to begin a new pattern, to tell a new story, to achieve a different vibration, to change your point of attraction.” ~Abraham Hicks.

For the longest time, I fought against this truth. I thought--and therefore believed--that my thoughts were truth set in stone. I thought and believed “how I saw things was how they were.” Point blank. End of story.

The Power of BeliefBut eventually, when life humbled me enough times, often as a result of my own thought patterns, light was shed upon my beliefs and the thoughts behind them, and I was able to see them in a whole new way.

'This was a huge aha moment!  Once I could finally step back and observe my thoughts from a more objective place, I could release some of the emotion behind them and take some of the air out of their sails.

They slowed down.

I observed some more.

It was like hitting the rewind button and watching a story unfold in slow motion.  When we can objectively look at our thoughts, we can choose to pick a new thought, and if we do that enough, we can birth a new and more beneficial belief.

Here is a personal example.  A few years ago, I applied for a job position that I wanted very badly.  I started to equate my worth as a person, my very value as a human being on whether or not I was employed and bringing home a paycheck.

I put so much weight on "getting this job".  I went through a very long and intense interview process, and finally after numerous phone interviews, I was flown into the corporate office for the final set of interviews.  Suddenly, all my thoughts were filled with fear.  I told myself I was not prepared, not good enough, not experienced enough.  I kept telling myself that I wasn’t enough.

This thought process converted into the belief that I was not right for the job and I completely discounted how far I have gotten in the process.  And you know what?  My negative thought patterns manifested in reality.  I got the dreaded phone call, “I am so sorry, but you just do not fit this position. You do not have the experience we are looking for.”

It took a while, but I did eventually uncover this thought pattern and decided to break up the pattern and create a new one.

Every single time I busted myself playing that old, outdated, completely untrue tape, I pushed pause.  I picked a new thought that felt better to me.  Instead of, “You are just a loser who doesn’t deserve this job.” I chose, “I have so much good to offer and as I am my authentic self, I will draw the perfect job into my life.”  And sure enough, many positive opportunities manifested for me.

Our thoughts really are powerful things.  What thoughts will YOU choose to think today?
