This Year, Take a Staycation Instead
Instead of jet setting off to an expensive locale somewhere for a week, stay local and spend less money. A staycation is a great alternative to vacationing for a variety of reasons: it can cost a whole lot less; it will give you the opportunity to avoid other travelers; and it can give you an opportunity to explore and engage in your community.
There are plenty of ways to enjoy the company of your closest friends and family without having to go far. Check out some of these tips for planning a staycation this year:
• Schedule Time - You work hard and you deserve some time away. Anyone who overworks herself is going to eventually find herself in a bad mood, so give yourself a break. Schedule specific start and end times for your staycation so you can know when you get off work on your scheduled day, that you won’t be working until you “return.” That means no checking work email, no “dropping in” on the office, and putting your Blackberry away for a few days. Spend this time relaxing and communicating with your friends and family instead of your coworkers.
• Plan Some Activities – Before you take your staycation, it is important to plan it just as you would a normal vacation. That doesn’t mean you have to abide by a strict schedule, but the more activities you have planned means more time you can spend doing what you love and not fretting about what to do next. Likewise, give yourself enough down time that you can go do something spontaneous.
• Discover Something New in Your Town – You know that restaurant you’ve been meaning to try? How about the paddleboats down at the lake? Now that you’ve given yourself the time away from the rat race, you’ll have a chance to discover all the things about your town that you never knew or have always wanted to try. There are some helpful sites out there to help you do so, check out Yelp.com for great user reviews on restaurants and activities in your area.
• Enjoy the Company – Whether you choose to staycation with friends, family or both, you’ll have a chance to just spend time with them without having the pressures of all your external responsibilities weighing you down. Play board games, watch funny movies, or just reminisce about old times. Taking a staycation can be as fun as a trip somewhere, especially since your companions are the ones you want to spend time with in the first place.
Going on a staycation this year is a great way to revitalize yourself by taking time off, without having all the stress that comes along with travel. Of course, this is just one way you can spend your time off, but what are some of the other ways you can have fun without spending much money or time away from home?
