Three Reasons to Be in a Good Mood This Valentine's Day, Even if You Aren't in Love

Happy Friday! This is my last post before Valentine's Day- I hope you have a great one! In case you're not looking forward to it and need a little perspective, here are three reasons to be in a good mood this Valentine's Day, even if you aren't in love.

  • At least you get to choose your Valentine, or opt for the lack of one. Spending the night alone with a good movie and delivery from your favorite restaurant is a million times better than being forced to spend it with someone you're not into.

Valentine's Day Fact: Back in the Middle Ages, they celebrated Valentine's Day by putting all the young single men and women's names in a bowl. You drew a name and that was your Valentine. And just to make sure everyone knew who your Valentine was, you would wear your Valentine's name pinned to your sleeve for a whole week. (Which was possibly the beginning of the phrase "wearing your heart on your sleeve".)

  • At least we've come a long way from the origins of this holiday. There are several stories of how Valentine's Day got started, and even the scholars disagree about exactly which parts of the stories are true. None of the options sound like something I'm sad to have missed out on.

Valentine's Day Fact: Many say the holiday is derived from a Roman fertility festival celebrated in mid-February that involved men getting naked and whipping women with animal hides. According to others, it's because St. Valentine, a priest, disagreed with the Roman Emperor's law that young men could not marry (to make them better soldiers.) They say that St. Valentine secretly married young lovers until he was eventually caught and executed, and the night before he died he wrote a love note to the girl he loved and signed it "From Your Valentine."

  • So, things could be worse. ;) Happy Valentine's Day. -Brigitte

I was in Verona once on vacation and we stopped at Juliet's balcony. To get to the courtyard where it was, you have to walk thru a little tunnel. On the wall is written little love notes that visitors write.

A good (newer) movie people should check out (if they don't have someone to share V-Day with, and are feeling a bit wistful) is "Peter & Vandy".

It's not the typical, nice-and-neat, sappy, over-produced, big studio romantic comedy. It actually contains real moments/situations that a person can identify with.

I will give you an A for effort, but "things could be worse," is not exactly a pep talk.

I got to spend the day with my family and relatives. So being single wasn't so bad today, haha.
