Three Ways to Get That "Spring Cleaning" Feeling Without Actually Cleaning

When I lived in Nebraska, the first days of spring warm enough to open windows and work in the yard usually meant a flurry of cleaning. You could do these things almost any day of the year where I'm living now in southern California, but in my second spring here I've realized we have our own signs of the season.

For instance: needing to water the cactus in the yard because it's done raining for the next five months, and seeing coyotes skulking around the neighborhood in broad daylight because it's mating season and romance makes them crazy and fearless just like us.

I'm a big fan of the spring cleaning feeling but have no basement to air out or caulking to scrape off. Here are 3 ways to get that fresh spring cleaning feeling without having to actually clean.

  1. Buy new socks (or a new toothbrush, or a new kitchen sponge). I cannot tell you how disproportionately happy these things make me for their price.
  2. Make a confession to somebody. Spring clean your brain and get rid of something you've been keeping inside. I know that for me, when my head is cluttered, every aspect of my life suffers.
  3. Clear your computer's desktop. Have you ever noticed how the less work you have to do, the more energy you seem to have to do it? When my computer's desktop is full of screenshots and memos I feel crowded and more swamped with things to do than I actually am.

Women speak because they wish to speak, whereas a man speaks only when driven to speak by something outside himself like, for instance, he can't find any clean socks.

Hire the best. Pay them fairly. Communicate frequently. Provide challenges and rewards. Believe in them. Get out of their way and they'll knock your socks off.

I will begin with this confession: whatever I have done in the course of my life, whether it be good or evil, has been done freely; I am a free agent.

The saddest object in civilization, and to my mind the greatest confession of its failure, is the man who can work, who wants work, and who is not allowed to work.

Hello,Brigitte.
Spring cleaning makes me feel good, as I feel like I am cleaning my "nest". Over the winter, bumping into and dislodging things indoors, I look forward to the "good weather" when I can have enough daylight after work. Then I have the drive to fix what is out of place.

Hey Bridgitte
Your comment about the new socks made me think about what I have been doing for many years (I am probably one of your oldest fans). Whenever I buy new socks or underware, I buy two packages. One goes the the local clothes drive. Not a big deal, but it does make me feel good.
