Tips For Home Organization – Part 2
In part 1 of this article, I covered basic tips to get started with our home organization project, particularly:
- Taking inventory of what needs to be done.
- Chunking into smaller tasks that will take less than 15 minutes to do.
- Prioritizing the most important tasks.
- Scheduling to get the tasks done.

Here are some additional tips to help with our home organization project:
- Get The Whole Family Involved – If you have children, get them involved. Teach them the importance of keeping an organized home. If you are living with a significant other, tell them that this project is important to you, and ask for their help. You can even make the organization time a fun experience for the whole family to get involved in.
- Have a Home For Everything – I noticed that when I don’t know where to put something, I’ll put it on a surface somewhere, and before I know it, all surfaces will have piles of random paper and stuff covering them. Creating a home for everything we own will make it easier for us to quickly clear off our surfaces – tables, counter tops, etc.
- Create the Habit of Putting Things Back – Going through the work of organizing our home is one thing, but keeping it organized is another thing. It’s sometimes de-motivating to see our hard work of organizing our living space become quickly cluttered again. Creating new habits to maintain an organized living space is just as important as tackling the mess in the first place. The first habit of keeping things organized is to put things back after each use. Do your best to keep surfaces and floors empty of random things. This means don’t throw clothes on the floor when we are changing, putting dishes in the washer when they are dirty, and putting the stapler away after using it. Simple habits will yield big results, and hours of time saved in the long run.
