Water – Source of Energy & Vitality
“Water is the only drink for a wise man.” ~Henry David Thoreau
Water is a necessity to life, yet many of us in the western world take it for granted. Water cleans clothes, dishes and bodies. It heats many houses and cools many drinks. Those of us who are able to use water whenever we want are extremely fortunate. It makes me happy to feel clean and sit at the end of the day with a cold drink of water.
However, we don’t often stop to think about water as a life sustaining sources. Even as water remains normal part of our life, we don’t use it to truly enhance our life.
Water not only sustains us, but it enhances our way of thinking, feeling and being. How?
First, the experience of water is amazing. We all have memories of life at the seashore or lake, and of a hot shower after spending the day ice-skating or sledding. Falling water, either from a shower or a waterfall, is full of energizing ions. Ocean water crashing to shore can lull you into hypnotic calm. A creek running over river rocks gurgles a sleepy lullaby. Water, frozen into winter snow, blankets the earth in brilliance and peace.
Second, water provides a wealth of energy and health to both body and mind. Our bodies are 80% water when we are young. As an adult, we are only 70%, and this can drop. Most of us do not drink enough water each day, and haven’t tried the eight full glasses a day to know what we are missing.
I propose two actions for you to try.
1. Drink a full glass of water at 2pm, which is a typical time for energy to sag each day. Wait 20 minutes and notice your energy shift.
2. Drink eight full glasses of water each day for two weeks, and notice how your overall energy changes. You may get off the couch without thinking about it, instead of groaning at the thought. You may wake up before your alarm clock. Or your body may simply feel better. Instead of trying to count the number of glasses you drink, what I found helpful is to fill up a liter of water at the start of each day, and make sure that I finish the jug before the end of the day.
Give yourself one or both of these challenges. It is only two weeks (or 20 minutes) of your life. You deserve to feel happier, and more energetic.
Water. When people think about water, they think clear, purity, life source, beauty, and tranquility. All these things can be yours if you appreciate what water can do for you in your life, and embrace it.
Now I’m going to take a break, and sit down with a nice cold glass of water.
