What Cooking Out Taught Me About a Good Mood
Cooking out is a great summer activity, but it has taught me a lot about planning, patience, and letting go, too. All these things are important when it comes to maintaining a good mood.

- Bring Something to the Table – If you want your own cookout to be a success, you’re likely to do plenty of preparation and setting up to make sure everyone will be comfortable and have fun. But if you’re coming to visit a friend’s house for his cookout, you’d better bring something along. Everyone has her own specialty, and this might be the chance for you to show yours. Bringing your own potato salad is a lot like putting a smile on your face and choosing to join in on the fun.
- Keep it Casual – The best cookouts are the ones where everyone could care less about the heat or the bugs because they are too busy having a blast. Cookouts are occasions for people to just let loose and not have to worry about being fancy. By keeping a casual attitude, too, you might find that your good mood is right there beside you holding a plate of baked beans.
- If It’s Going to Rain, So Be It – Face it. You can’t control the weather. It might rain on your cookout, and there might be no other option but to go inside. So do what you have to in any situation where something goes unexpectedly – adapt. Moods are like this, too. If things aren’t going your way, then just adapt.
- Have Fun – When did you stop having fun? Isn’t a cookout inspiration enough for you to get out there and get a smile on your face? Things are never that bad. Grab some fresh fruit and a cold drink and get out there.
- You Might Burn the Burgers, but Someone Likes Them That Way – The lesson here is that no matter how alone you might feel at times, there is always someone else who feels the same way. So don’t despair, because even if you burn the burgers you’re grilling, someone will volunteer and take the ones that are “well done.” You know what they say: “different strokes for different folks.”
Cooking out is a great summertime activity that can bring people together and inspire a good mood. But look at the actual process as a metaphor for how you should look at finding your good mood naturally.

Here I come and read a nice uplifting article that reminds me that summer fun and friends can always put you in a good mood. Then I go and read this article. Cold beer and hot dogs can trigger headaches. Now you want to have a good time, relax, enjoy your day and a Harvard University study decides to spoil your day. Well I don’t care what Harvard says, I’m taking your advice.
